Immediately you are drawn into this simple task, seeing this child's often futile efforts to be acknowledged by the adults around him, empathizing with his difficulties. A strange sense of foreboding begins to prevail as you await the outcome of his efforts. Will he complete his task and get home before dusk?
Why is it so hard to get a straight answer from any of these adults? The music is often enchanting and contributes much to the atmosphere.
Personally I love the old blacksmith he runs into in the neighboring village. An old friendly man with a deep passion for making windows and doors. The life of the village and its history could be seen through the eyes of this old gent, but truly, the boy, has simply got to return this notebook! Often it's the smallest and simplest observations on life that are the most emotionally resonant and impactful, as is the case with Abbas Kiarostami's film Where Is the Friend's Home?

I can handle the truth. That feeling when you're so desperate to not see your friend get in trouble, that you're willing to do their homework Iranian culture normally puts a lot of emphasis on children and the education they must receive in order to "be good contributors to society". The methods used are, of course, inappropriate and destructive, but that's life's vicious cycle: unless a generation breaks the moral patterns established, they will keep on getting transmitted through heritage.
This beautiful slice of everyday life makes us go deep into the mind of a child, a child that we once were. Suddenly, we are focusing on adults for segments of around 6 minutes for contrast effects.
Adulthood hypocrisy is a strong issue to deal with, but it is very satisfactory to see a talented filmmaker to put Iran on the map, question certain aspects of education and growth and focus on the little, audiovisual and sensory elements of life. It's a cruel world, and it's everyone for themself. Parents discipline, teachers set strict rules, grandparents punish; it's a society rooted in authoritarian demands, business and personal responsibility.
Men bargain to save a little bit of money, and write notes to document that debts were paid because the other party can't be trusted; men are proud of their labor, and even this is merely a detour on the road to helping others. Children don't belong in this world, not yet. Children haven't been hardened by the harsh realities of existence, and right now the most important thing is a selfless act of returning his friend's notebook so that he won't get yelled at by their teacher tomorrow.
Adults feel it…. The real definition of poetic cinema.
